Legal experts are warning that Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, faces a real chance of jail time should he be convicted of new federal tax-felony charges made against him by the Department of Justice.
The charges, which were just recently filed, allege that Hunter Biden “knowingly and willingly” failed to pay taxes on foreign income from China, Ukraine, and Romania between 2016 and 2018. In addition, the charges allege that Biden attempted to hide the income by moving funds to various countries, including China and the United Arab Emirates.
Legal experts told the press that these charges are extremely serious, and could carry a prison sentence of up to five years if found guilty. The charges include a total of sixteen counts of tax evasion, as well as other charges related to filing false returns and conspiracy to commit offense.
In response to the charges, Hunter Biden has already hired a team of legal advisors to defend him in court. He has also maintained his innocence, saying that “I take full responsibility for the mistakes I have made in my personal knowledge and understanding of taxes owed.”
Regardless of his claim of innocence, these new charges could cause significant harm to Biden’s reputation. Furthermore, experts warn that if he is convicted, the prospect of a lengthy jail sentence is very real.
It remains to be seen how the legal system will treat Biden in this case, and for now, it is impossible to determine whether or not he will be found guilty. In the meantime, however, legal experts are warning that Hunter Biden faces a real chance of jail time should he be convicted.
