As the 2020 U.S. presidential election kicks into full gear, Supreme court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a report urging caution on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its potential impacts for the electoral process and outcome.
Roberts’ report, delivered last week, stressed the importance of understanding both the potential benefits and risks that AI could have on the election process and its overall outcome. He specifically noted the dangers of AI-enabled media manipulation and manipulation of voting systems, noting that it was vital to remain vigilant and aware of the power inherent in these technologies.
“We must be aware of and guard against the potential for AI-enabled manipulation of our political processes,” Roberts wrote in his report. “It is incumbent on us all to be mindful of the need to establish systems and standards that will protect our democratic institutions and our nation’s electoral processes, even where there may be technological advancements and development that make it easier to do so.”
He underscored that AI could be used for good, and that quite a few organizations have already employed the technology to detect voter registration fraud. However, he expressed concern over AI being used to spread misinformation and impersonation of voters.
In his report, Roberts concluded that it was of the utmost importance to ensure that all available safeguards are in place, such as those provided by the U.S. Department of Defense, and for others involved in the process to remain alert and watchful for any signs of possible interference or manipulation of the elections.
With the evolving landscape of AI and its potential range of influence, Roberts’ report serves to remind us of the need to be aware and careful on its use. With many states enacting new voting regulations, and what is likely to be a highly contentious election year, this serves as an important reminder that it is crucial to understand the potential implications of AI and ensure that citizens and organizations alike are prepared for any potential irregularities or interference that may arise.
