A group of congressional Republicans have sent a letter to U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, demanding full details of the amount of aid the United States has provided to Ukraine since the 2014 revolution.
The group of 18 Republican legislators is led by GOP Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and asks Sullivan to provide details on all Ukraine-related money the US has authorized or dispersed since January 2014, when the Ukrainian revolution took place.
The letter specifically inquires about money that has been dispersed “through diplomatic and foreign assistance channels, including the European Reassurance Initiative, the Heimlich-Gorsuch Plan, and the European Union’s response to the Ukrainian crisis.”
According to the letter, the information requested is “particularly relevant at this moment because it is important for Congress and for the American people to understand the scope of US contributions to the Ukrainian people.”
The GOP lawmakers also cite current US-Russia tensions over the country’s military buildup on Ukraine’s eastern border as a factor in their inquiries.
The letter states that it is essential for legislators and citizens to “know the full extent of US assistance to Ukraine.” The Republican lawmakers have given Sullivan a deadline of April 15, 2021 for him to comply with the request.
The demand for information comes during a time when the United States is dealing with heightened tensions with Russia, and as the Biden Administration seeks to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
The Republicans are asking Sullivan to provide a detailed account of what money has been allocated to Ukraine and how it has been used.
The Biden Administration is yet to respond to the letter. It remains to be seen how the administration will respond, and what, if any, information it will provide to GOP legislators.
