On Wednesday, the state of Texas surprised the city of Los Angeles, CA with its 12th busload of undocumented migrants. This move comes just weeks after the LA city government passed an ordinance to become a “sanctuary city” and protect such individuals living within its borders.
The news of this situation has predictably generated a range of reactions. Supporters of Los Angeles’ sanctuary city status point to the humanitarian character of shielding refugees from federal immigration enforcement, while opponents consider it a violation of the principle of federal anti-illegal immigration laws.
Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, was highly critical in a statement the day of the news, claiming that he was sending the busloads of migrants “to send a message that Texas will not turn a blind eye to illegal immigration,” effectively calling into question Los Angeles’s promises to protect such individuals.
So far, two buses have arrived in Los Angeles since the announcement, carrying the remaining 10 en route. Each bus will be inspected and those aboard will have to go through background checks upon entering the city. The Los Angeles’ police department has been put on alert, and each bus is escorted by armed guards.
This move from Governor Abbott has raised concerns from many that Texas may take legal action against the city of Los Angeles. However, the President of the United States has yet to speak on the matter.
Despite the predictable backlash, the people of Los Angeles remain in support of their government’s decision to become a sanctuary city and Allen Kato, the Mayor of Los Angeles has stated that “We in the City of Angeles will do our all to help those without a home.”
The arrival of the 12th bus marks a new twist in the ongoing debate on immigration. As of now, no legal action has yet been taken against the city by Texas. As such, it remains to be seen how the city of Los Angeles, and the state of Texas, will continue to respond to the ongoing developments.
