Senator Chuck Schumer of New York recently urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to support Israel’s right to exist and defend itself in light of recent violence in the Middle East. This comes at a time when China’s Ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, stated that the “relationship between China and the U.S. will determine the future of humanity.”
China has long been a significant player in the Middle East conflict, using its influence to support both Israel and Palestinian interests. In recent years, however, the Chinese government has become increasingly critical of the Israeli government’s policies and actions, calling for a two-state solution to the conflict.
Senator Schumer’s remarks, made on Twitter, call on China to play an “important role” in ensuring Israel’s security and the safety of the region. He noted that China’s immense economic power and influence should be used productively in this regard.
The statement also follows an announcement by President Xi that the Chinese government will launch a five-year plan to increase economic and trade ties with both Israel and Palestine. According to Beijing, this strategy is intended to help “promote peace and stability” in the region.
Despite the conciliatory language from Beijing, the Chinese government has been increasingly vocal in its criticism of Israel’s policies. Over the past several months, Beijing has issued proclamations warning Israel against further settlement-building in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as well as calling on the Israeli government to take “concrete steps” towards a two-state solution.
Given the complexities of the region, Schumer’s statement serves as a reminder that the future of the Middle East depends on international cooperation. The United States, China, and other key countries have a responsibility to seek a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, instead of further exacerbating the existing tensions. Only then will a sustainable framework for peace in the region be established.
